How to clean pee out of a mattress

Cleaning pee (human or animal) out of a mattress isn't as hard as you'd think.

We spend several hours a day lying on our mattresses, whether it be sleeping, napping, or lounging, so having a clean surface is super important. But when you have a kid or a pet (or both), accidents can happen. Yes, we're talking about pee. In the bed. While your first reaction may be to panic, don't — you're not the first person who has had to deal with a pee-soaked mattress and you won't be the last, and your mattress is salvageable.

Ahead, we asked Baily Carson, a Home Care Expert at Angi, about how to properly get the pee stains and smells out of a mattress (until the next accident, at least).

It's best to clean a soiled mattress right away, but you may not discover the pee until later, or not until the next morning/day. Even if it's been a few hours, you don't have the throw a soiled mattress out, says Carson. There are two steps to follow right away:

Determine if it's human or pet urine before getting started, and then follow the below steps for cleaning a mattress of wet or dry urine.

You love your pets, and while you don't mind sharing a bed with them, you don't want them to share everything with you. "Pet urine tends to have a stronger odor than human urine, so while the process for cleaning it out of a mattress is similar, there is one extra step to prevent odor from sticking around," says Carson.

"Animals tend to revisit the scene of the crime and they’re usually drawn to it by the scent," says Carson. She recommends using an enzymatic cleaner that will remove the odor (beyond what we can smell) to discourage your pet from peeing on the mattress again. "Remember to clean a broader area than just the main spot, since pee splashes and can leave stains and odors that will keep your pet coming back," she adds.

Good news: you probably already own most of the products you need to clean a mattress. Household products like laundry detergent, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda, and a vacuum are all useful to clean a soiled mattress. However, if these products aren’t working, or if you notice lingering stains or smells, it might be time to call in a professional mattress cleaner to make sure you end up with a fully clean mattress.
